Women’s Health Check: A Lifespan Approach to Wellness
Women’s health is dynamic, shifting through distinct phases—from reproductive years and pregnancy to perimenopause and beyond. While women are statistically more likely than men to engage with preventative healthcare, the complexity of female physiology requires a tailored, proactive approach.
At The Village Medical Practice, our Women’s Health Checks are designed to address both the "silent" risks and the specific hormonal transitions that impact your quality of life.
Key Investigations and Screening
A Women's Health Check is a comprehensive "top-to-toe" assessment. Depending on your age and risk factors, your GP will focus on:
1. Cervical and Breast Health
Cervical Screening Test (CST): Replacing the old "Pap Smear," the CST looks for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In 2026, many women are now eligible for self-collection, allowing you to take your own sample in private at the clinic—a method proven to be just as accurate as a clinician-collected sample (Cancer Council, 2026).
Breast Awareness: We perform clinical breast examinations and discuss the timing for your BreastScreen Australia mammogram (recommended every two years for women aged 50–74, or earlier if there is a family history).
2. Cardiovascular & Bone Health
Heart Health Check: Heart disease is often under-diagnosed in women because symptoms can present differently (e.g., nausea or jaw pain rather than "crushing" chest pain). We assess blood pressure, cholesterol, and absolute cardiovascular risk.
Bone Density (DEXA): As estrogen levels decline, bone density can decrease. For women over 65 (or earlier if risk factors exist), we may order a DEXA scan to screen for osteoporosis.
3. Reproductive & Preventative Health
Pre-conception Planning: Discussing folate, vaccinations, and genetic carrier screening if you are considering pregnancy.
STI Screening: Confidential testing for common infections, which is a routine part of sexual health maintenance.
Iron Levels: Checking for iron deficiency, especially for those with heavy menstrual cycles or plant-based diets.
Menopause and Perimenopause
One of the most significant transitions in a woman's life is the shift toward menopause. Symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, "brain fog," and mood changes often begin in perimenopause—the years leading up to the final period.
Our Menopause Assessment Service: > Because menopause is a complex hormonal event, we offer a dedicated Menopause Assessment Service (documented separately). This specialized service provides a deep dive into symptom management, Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) options, and long-term health protection during this transition.
The "Mental Load" and Wellbeing
Women often carry a high "mental load," balancing career, caregiving, and household management. This can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression. We provide a supportive environment to discuss mental health and can facilitate Mental Health Treatment Plans to ensure you have access to the right psychological support.
